On February 7, 2011, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call from a private residence in the 5600 block of Ritz Way in Fair Oaks. The text of the call stated that a seventeen-year old male had been shot in the chest.

Upon officers’ arrival, they found the victim, who was a resident of the location, wounded inside the garage of the home. Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of his injury. The victim was taken into surgery, and his condition is unknown at this time.

Deputies detained several male subjects, who were determined to be acquaintances of the victim, at the scene. Preliminary statements by those individuals suggested that the victim was with some friends inside the garage of the home, and that there was a handgun present. During the course of handling the firearm, one of the subjects accidentally discharged the gun, striking the victim. It was unclear who was in possession of the handgun at the time of the shooting. Several of the victim’s family members were home during the incident, but were unable to provide information about what took place.

Deputies recovered a handgun from outside of the residence, and were working to determine whether it was the weapon used in the shooting. At this time, no suspects are in custody, and the decision whether to file any criminal charges will be determined upon completion of the investigation.
