Inmate Death at Sacramento County Jail

Earlier this morning, a fifty-year old male died while awaiting release from the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man had been in custody since Sunday morning, May 15th, when he was booked into the jail at approximately 11:00a.m. on a charge of public intoxication.

Yesterday evening, the inmate had been processed and was in a holding cell with other inmates awaiting release. Shortly before midnight, the inmate became unresponsive. Deputies and jail medical staff performed CPR on the inmate, and paramedics were requested. Upon their arrival, paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the inmate and transported him to a local hospital. The inmate was pronounced dead at approximately 12:40a.m.

The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notifying his next of kin.
