Gunman Shot by Deputies in South Sacramento

Shortly after 12:05 a.m. today, Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Pomegranate Avenue and Delta Pointe Way in south Sacramento, regarding a call of an armed subject in the neighborhood. A passerby in a vehicle stated that he had been confronted by a male adult who pointed a gun at him.

While deputies were en route to the location, additional calls were received from the area. One caller said that a man with a gun was shooting out windows to vehicles, and that someone had been shot. Another caller relayed information that a male was holding a female hostage at gunpoint. In each call, the description of the gunman was similar.

When deputies arrived in the area, they observed a male subject, who was walking down the middle of the street, matching the description given by callers. The deputies observed that the subject was holding a handgun at the time they contacted him. When contacted, the man pointed his firearm in the direction of the deputies.

Faced with imminent danger to their lives, two deputies fired their weapons at the gunman, striking him multiple times. Paramedics were immediately requested to the location. The gunman, a male in his twenties, was transported to a nearby hospital and died of his injuries shortly thereafter. The name of the victim will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, upon notification to his next of kin.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division will be conducting the investigation into this incident, which is standard practice for any deputy-involved shooting that occurs within the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction.

In accordance with the Sheriff’s Department’s policies and procedures, both deputies will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. The officers involved in the incident are assigned to the Central Field Services Division, and have nine and fourteen years of service respectively.
