DUI Sentencing Program At JFK HS Offers Students Sober Look at DUI

For five consecutive years Sacramento City continues to rank among the top three cities for fatality or injuries where a driver under the age of 21 had been drinking.

On Friday, March 9, the Honorable Judge Russel L. Hom will hold an actual court sentencing of a first time DUI offender before approximately 1,100 students at John F. Kennedy High School's large gymnasium.

Students will directly witness the legal consequences of drinking and driving, including detention, imposed fines and penalties. Students will hear from and interact with the judge, attorneys, guest speaker and possibly the defendant.

Transferring an actual DUI sentencing from a county courthouse to a local high school is a two prong approach of educating teenagers about the legal consequences of drinking and driving as well as the judicial branch of the government. They also have an opportunity to learn more about the role and decisions of the judicial branch of the government. And, the program gives students a positive experience of interacting with court staff.
