Gunman Shot by Officer in North Highlands

A 21-year-old suspect wielding a handgun was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer in North Highlands today. The suspect was struck once in the lower body and taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury. No officers were injured during this incident.

Shortly after 6:00 p.m., a Sheriff’s detective and a CHP officer both assigned to the Sheriff’s IMPACT Division were working a field assignment in the 3700 block of Myrtle Avenue. While conducting proactive patrol in the area, they observed a man walking down the street. The officers attempted to make contact with the man, and he turned and fled from them in the opposite direction from which he had been walking.

The CHP officer, who was a passenger in the unmarked enforcement vehicle, exited and began to chase the suspect on foot. Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s detective turned around and started to follow the foot pursuit of the suspect by her partner officer.

The suspect ran westbound down Myrtle Avenue and turned south down a driveway as the CHP officer followed behind him. The officer shouted numerous commands to stop at the suspect, who ignored the directives and continued to flee. During the chase, the suspect retrieved a handgun and brandished it in the direction of the officer. In response to this imminent threat to his life, the CHP officer drew his duty weapon and fired once at the suspect, striking him in the lower body. The suspect dropped his handgun, which was recovered at the scene, and was then detained as paramedics were called to respond. The suspect was transported to an area hospital, and is expected to survive his injury.

The officer involved is a 13-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol. As is standard practice with all officer-involved shootings that occur in the unincorporated area of Sacramento County, this incident will be investigated by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
