Local Firefighters Will Heat
Up The Kitchen at State Fair

Firefighters from around the Sacramento region are prepared to blaze a path to victory in the California State Fair’s 2012 Firehouse Chef Challenge.
The three preliminary rounds are set for 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. July 28, with the finals at 11 a.m. July 29, all in California Foodstyle in Expo Center, Building 2. In the prelims, four two-person teams will cook their way through an “Iron Chef”-like competition.

They must incorporate a mystery ingredient into their dishes. All other ingredients will be provided by the State Fair and placed in shopping carts in front of the stage. Competitors will have two hours to “shop” for ingredients, cook and serve a main dish, salad or dessert large enough to serve six people.

All participants will receive ribbons. First-place finishers in each preliminary round will move on to the finals. Judges will evaluate the competitors’ appearance and organizational skills, as well as flavor, texture, doneness and presentation of the finished dish. Samples will be handed out to audience members.
