Suspected Child Molester Returned to Sacramento

Suspected child molester Michael Joseph Chavez.

A fugitive from Sacramento County has been returned to the United States and is currently in custody in connection with an investigation that began in 2006.

Michael Joseph Chavez, 33, is being held on $250,000 bail for charges of committing lewd acts with a child under the age of fourteen years of age.

In February of 2006, Sheriff's deputies began an investigation into allegations that Chavez had sexually molested his daughter and stepdaughter, ages nine and ten years old respectively, at the time. The investigation led to the identification of Chavez as the suspect but he disappeared and his whereabouts remained unknown for several years.

Sheriff's investigators worked together with the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (Sacramento office) Violent Crime Squad and Fugitive Program. Information was developed that Chavez had fled outside the United States and on April 2, 2008, an arrest warrant was issued for Chavez for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution.

In March of 2011, detectives from the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau received a tip that Chavez was staying just outside of Mexico City, Mexico. Sheriff's investigators and federal authorities than began working with Mexican authorities to determine Chavez' exact whereabouts and formulate a plan to take custody of him.

On December 13, 2012, Chavez was taken into custody in Cancun, Mexico. He was extradited to Houston, Texas, the following day and booked into the Harris County Jail. Sheriff's detectives flew to Houston, took custody of Chavez, and returned him to Sacramento County where he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail later that evening. Chavez is scheduled to be arraigned December 18, 2012, at 1:30 p.m.
