Two Dead Birds Test Positive For West Nile Virus

Virus Activity Detected Earlier Than Other Years

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District confirmed the first five positive mosquito samples and two new dead birds infected with West Nile virus in both Sacramento and Yolo counties.

Gunman Shot by Officer in North Highlands

A 21-year-old suspect wielding a handgun was shot by a California Highway Patrol officer in North Highlands today. The suspect was struck once in the lower body and taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury. No officers were injured during this incident.

Rancho Cordova Police Officer Arrested on Drug Charges


On Wednesday morning a 23-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on narcotics charges.

Kelly Smith, 43, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit, and unlawful use of personal identifying information of another. Smith was later released from custody after posting bail.

On March 31, 2012, investigators within the Sheriff’s Department learned of alleged misconduct by Smith. An investigation was immediately initiated, and Smith was placed on administrative leave.

Further investigation by the Sheriff’s Department’s Professional Standards Division resulted in the charges that Smith was arrested for today. Smith is assigned to the Rancho Corodva Police Department who contacts with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

“Maintaining the public trust is paramount to the Sheriff’s Department. Any alleged violation of that trust is something that the Sheriff’s Department will aggressively investigate and take appropriate action,” Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said.

Both the administrative and criminal investigations into these allegations are ongoing and, as such, no further information can be given at this time. More information regarding these investigations will be released if and when it becomes available.

Man Shot in Head Near Elk Grove Record Store, Police Search For Shooter

DEVELOPING

A man was shot in the head near the Elk Grove Dimples stores located on the 9600 block of Elk Grove-Florin Road at approximately 9:25 tonight. The victim was transferred to an area hospital and there is no current status on his condition.

Police are looking for the suspect who is reported to have fled in black 1992 Ford Explorer with licence plate 3BHF649.

The suspect is described as white male aged 25 to 30, 5' 9", 250 lbs, wearing a black pea coat, black jeans and shoulder length hair.

Man Who Prowled Elk Grove Sentenced to 425 years to Life

District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that the Honorable Steve White sentenced Caesar Fontillas to 425 years to life in prison. Fontillas was convicted by jury of multiple counts of residential burglary, attempted residential burglary, and one count of receiving stolen property. The court further found that Fontillas had previous convictions for residential burglary and arson.

Galt Flea Market Counterfeiters Plead Guilty



United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that Victor Puga Quiroz, 28, of Modesto, and Martin Munoz Peralta, 40, of San Jose, pleaded guilty today to conspiring to commit criminal copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit labels, illicit labels, and counterfeit documentation and packaging.
