District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that 38-year-old Branche Smith pled no contest to misdemeanor assault under color of authority. Smith was formerly a peace officer with the Twin Rivers Police Department.

On September 17, 2010, Smith grabbed two subjects by the neck in choke holds and lifted them off benches to which they were secured by handcuffs. He also pointed his Taser at the chest of a third subject handcuffed to a bench and threatened to deploy the device if the subject did not stop shaking.

On May 30, 2011, Smith kicked a handcuffed subject in the head as that subject was being restrained at the jail. Smith was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to serve sixty days in the county jail. He can apply to the Sheriff’s Department for a work-release program.
