In what might be the only opportunity before the June 3 primary, all five candidates for the Ninth California Assembly District seat met in forum tonight at Sacramento's Kennedy High School.

The candidates, Democrats Jim Cooper, Darrell Fong and Diane Rodriguez were joined by Republicans Tim Gursulowsky and Manuel Martin in the hour-long forum that consisted of audience questions and opening and closing statements. The top two finishers in the June primary, regardless of party affiliation will advance to the November general election.

In their opening and closing statements the Democratic candidates, who are all current office holders focused on their respective service. For Cooper and Fong, veteran law enforcement officers discussed their public service while Rodriguez, without mentioning Cooper and Fong specifically, said she is not taking any special interest money.

Cooper and Fong have led the five-candidate field in fundraiser, with each bring in tens-of-thousands of dollars, primarily from a variety of labor unions and various political action committees.

For Republicans Gursulowsky and Martin, neither of whom have held elected office, they focused on economic issues.

The candidates answered audience questions on education, affirmative action, school funding and state budget issues.
