Sacramento Man Convicted in Murder of 13-Month Old Child

A Sacramento man was found guilty of the murder of 13-month old child.

In jury trial that concluded yesterday, Guyland Washington was convicted of murder in the second degrees of 13-month old Leila Shehadeh.

In evidence presented in the trial, on the morning of July 11, 2014, Washington’s then girlfriend left her infant in his care and when the mother returned that afternoon, she discovered her daughter was not breathing and unresponsive.

Paramedics took the child to the UC Davis Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. When doctors observed bruising and multiple injuries to Leila’s head, body and anal areas, they reported suspected child abuse to law enforcement.

An autopsy showed Leila suffered a skull fracture with associated brain swelling, rib fractures and significant bruising on various parts of her body. Her cause of death was determined to be intentionally inflicted blunt force injuries.

Washington faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for December 8, 2017, at 9 a.m. in Department 12 before Judge Maryanne Gilliard.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Dawn Bladet of the DA's homicide unit.
