Man Convicted of Attempted Murder, Robbery of Armored Car Sentenced

A man who was convicted on March 2 for an attempted murder and robbery of an armored car was sentenced yesterday in Sacramento Superior Court.

Gilbert Smith, 47, was convicted in the July 8, 2016, attempted robbery of an armored car at the Golden One Credit Union on Florin Road in Sacramento. Smith was found guilty of shooting the guard after robbing a cash bag. 

After shooting the guard, Smith sustained gunshot wounds when the injured guard returned fire. The guard suffered severe injuries, including an infected lung and a fractured rib that required multiple surgeries.

At the time of the attempted murder, Smith was on bail after he and his girlfriend at the time, Shenita Marie Barnes of Sacramento, were arrested for their roles during February 9, 2016, robbery of the cash room at the Elk Grove Boulevard Walmart.

DNA samples were taken from a mask that was used during the commission of the Walmart robbery matched Smith's DNA. Smith pled no contest to those charges. 

Smith will serve 32 years to life in prison for the Florin Road incident. For the Walmart robbery, Smith was sentenced to an additional 4 years and 4 months, consecutive to the 32 years to life sentence.
