A California Highway Patrol that was parked on the shoulder of a freeway was demolished by a careless motorist.

The CHP reported that an officer in training and his field training officer were standing a safe distance from the unit while investigating an accident on northbound US-101 near the Sonoma-Marin county line. A van heading north veered onto the shoulder and collided with the patrol unit.

As a reminder, the CHP said when vehicles are approaching an authorized stationary vehicle they are required to reduce speed and move over. These vehicles include emergency vehicles that are displaying emergency lights, a stationary tow truck that is displaying flashing amber warning lights, or a stationary marked Department of Transportation vehicle that is displaying flashing amber warning lights.
